Imprisoned in an Anglican residential care home?
David Feddersen, 60, turned to Anglicare for help in late 2006 only to find himself “imprisoned” in Ian George Court, Brompton, and medicated for schizophrenia – a mental illness he has never suffered from.
Ian Bruce, the former care home chaplain who helped Mr Feddersen “escape” Ian George Court and psychiatrist Dr Peter Gauvin have challenged Anglicare over his treatment.
Mr Feddersen said he lost two years of his life while in Ian George Court, “drugged and downtrodden” with no hope of rehabilitation.
“Once you are in there, you do not get out,” the former alcoholic, now sober for seven years, said
“What they did to me was abuse. I couldn’t get out. I was a prisoner. In the end I jumped the back fence to escape.”
On release, Mr Feddersen was discharged with a bag full of medications – 640 tablets in total, some of which had the potential to kill him, his psychiatrist Dr Gauvin said.
