Pakistan’s two major religious political parties approved the murder. That tells me all I need to know about them. Thugs! Assholes!
Now, where on the scale is Australia with regard to blasphemy laws? Not blasphemy as such, but we have laws against hate speech and various differences between states. Wikipedia has details on the various acts and cases which have been brought forward; roughly speaking it seems that the legislation centres on vilification of persons and/or groups rather than religions. So if I said “Islam is stupid” that would be, IMHO and IANAL, outside the scope of Australian laws, but if I said “Muslims are stupid” then it would be just in-scope. The more targeted my barb, the more likely it could be an offence; if I said “Fred Nurk is stupid because he is a Muslim”, I’m painting a big bullseye on my back. However, it seems that prosecution under these acts is quite rare and conviction is not at all certain.
