James Robinson fled to the United States in 1985 to escape his victims.
He was extradited to the UK where a jury at Birmingham Crown Court convicted him of 21 charges of sexual abuse.

The court heard that James Robinson preyed on quiet, vulnerable boys.

The judge labelled the Church’s role in the case “questionable” and has called for a sweeping investigation.

Robinson practised his ministry in churches across the West Midlands between 1971 and 1985, where parishioners knew him as Father Jim.
What they did not know was that Robinson had already been sexually abusing children 12 years before he was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest.

But the extradition process stalled for many years as the US and the UK had no agreement covering such crimes.
It took 15 years for the police to have him extradited.

The paedophile continued to work as a priest in California until 1993, receiving payments from the Catholic Church of around $1,300 a month until 2001.
The 73-year-old repeatedly denied the charges and had argued that he could not afford to return to Britain.

But it was revealed in court that in the year 2000 Robinson was sent a cheque for $13,500 by the archdiocese of Birmingham.

Judge Patrick Thomas described the Catholic Church’s role in James Robinson’s case as “highly questionable”.
