Another Case of “Too Little, Too Late”
Newcastle’s Anglican Diocese says it is co-operating with a police investigation into the sexual abuse of minors by a priest who died three years ago.
Father Peter Rushton worked across the Diocese of Newcastle from 1963 to 2007, in Cessnock, Wyong, Weston, Wallsend, Lake Macquarie and Maitland.
Bishop Brian Farran says the allegations of sexual abuse came to light after the priest’s death in 2007.
He’s confirmed the Diocesan Director of Professional Standards is investigating the matters, along with the police.
Bishop Farran says the Church is supporting victims of the late Father Rushton and wishes to publicly apologise to any person affected.

Note this guy was an Anglican not a Catholic. Anglicans let their priests marry, yes? So it might not be a case of sexual repression gone bad, but a deliberate move into a position where young children were readily available.
Also note what the ABC article doesn’t say – Peter Rushton was the Archdeacon of Maitland. I guess that’s a fairly high position.

Or better still, contact the Police first, media second, then call your church.

The link was very revealing.
Thank you.
He looks like a stage hypnotist!
But as to your “Anglican not a Catholic” observation regarding marriage as a potential sexual outlet, was this turbulent priest married?
If not, it renders the distinction moot.
His behaviour is exactly what one expects when those with little or no self-restraint are presented with an “all you can eat” buffet of fresh meat.
What better career-path for such a character than the church?
