THE Church of Scientology says allegations it is using Adelaide as an off-shore base for its international operations to avoid paying tax are “offensive”.
I’ll bet that you didn’t know that Scientology in Britain, Denmark, Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, Sweden, South Africa, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto & British Columbia was being run from a dingy little house in Cowandilla! (The owners are Greek Orthodox market gardeners, and know nothing about their house being used as an international headquarters for Scientology!) It would be high comedy were it not for the damage that scientologists wreak.
An investigation by Channel 7’s TodayTonight reporter Bryan Seymour alleged to have uncovered a ploy used by Scientology to dodge tax obligations in the United Kingdom and eight European countries.
Mr Seymour said he had details of how the Church of Scientology Religious Education College Inc registered those operations in South Australia, to a Cowandilla address, to avoid paying corporate tax under Britain’s foreign company law.
“The only thing we do know for a fact is that they claim they are a South Australian charity,” Mr Seymour said.
“SA has the most liberal laws regarding compliance in setting up and running an association”.

Registering a charity in SA and running the entire UK operation as a subsidiary of that antipodean shell is par for the course for Scientology; it hardly tips the scales on my incredulometer. Any offense that Scientology says they feel is entirely manufactured outrage, for they have done far worse things than that.
For example, take a look at Operation Clambake’s report on the tale of Larry Wollersheim who fought Scientology in court for 22 years before getting his money:
“Wollersheim was granted an award of $30 million by the jury that heard his case; this award was reduced, on appeal, to $2.5 million. Nevertheless, Scientology not only repeatedly refused to pay, continually appealing the case; it also filed suits against Wollersheim, in attempts to either force him to a settlement or drop his case against CoS entirely.”
And that’s not all, the CoS also moved all the money out of the entity which Wollersheim sued to avoid paying:
“After the judgement was upheld numerous times in the courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, the Church of Scientology retreated into its corporate structure, transferring all assets from its former “mother church,” the Church of Scientology of California, to a new body, the Church of Scientology International, in an attempt to evade the judgement against CSC.”

Wolly got his money, finally, but it took 22 years and untold amounts of stress and effort to get that. I applaud Wolly’s persistence and decry the disgusting organisation which lied and cheated so many times.
