My Idea for Combating Religious Indoctrination Classes in NSW Schools
… And it is all my own!
As you will no doubt be aware, there is a brouhaha brewing over religious indoctrination classes in NSW schools.
These (Christian only) brainwashing sessions are held during normal class-time, (unlike South Australia where they are held outside of school hours), and are supposed to be on an ‘opt in’ scheme, under the law. But of course, over the decades it has (illegally) morphed into an ‘opt out’ scheme.
The pupils who do ‘opt out’ have to spend the time in a supervised classroom . Supervised so that they can be checked that they are doing NOTHING USEFUL, such as homework, and thereby getting ahead of their poor comrades in the equally pointless RE classes.
They are not even allowed to read books that may have a bearing on their class work.
Naturally, there is a considerable stigma to having your uncool atheist parents make you stay in a class doing nothing, whilst your mates are in RE.
But! I have conjured up a solution!
If the atheist parents can install enough gaming consoles such second-hand PS2s in the apostate room, or even donate their gaming gear for the hour, the kids will flock away from RE! The class will be nearly empty, and the children cannot be accused of gaining any advantage in terms of coursework.
Bingo. Problem solved.
What are you waiting for, atheist parents?

It won’t work. When I questioned the principal about alternative activities I was informed that the kids out of RE class “were not to have any fun because it makes it difficult for religious parents to keep their kids in RE class”. I’d just pitch up and take them home but he got annoyed and we ended up with a compromise where they are allowed to do homework.

Bugger!
“No Fun”?
Where is that clause in the relevant law?
They are making it up as they go along!
It sounds to me that the principal is overstepping the mark in terms of what they can and can’t proscribe. (Apart from acting illegally by making it ‘opt out’).
He is actively discriminating behalf of religious parents in a public school, and against secular parents. This may well be unlawful in itself. It is none of his business ensuring that these vile indoctrination sessions are the most attractive option available by making alternatives as gruesome a torture as possible.
At least your activism actually worked in this case, and they are allowed to do something more than useful! With any luck, this will ‘pay off’ for the children academically. Rather than having their heads emptied of real knowledge, they are filling them up!
