American Humanist Association hold prom to support gay students
When a high school in Mississippi told a female student that she could not bring her girlfriend to the prom, it started a landslide that they could not have expected.
The student threatened to sue the school for its unconstitutional behavior so, thinking it the safest course of action to take, the school cancelled the prom altogether to avoid any further embarrassment.
The school district however stated that they hoped that private citizens in the community would organize a dance. A private dance would be legally allowed to invite or in this case not invite who ever they choose. Presumably the school seemed to think that a Church or other religious organization would hold a dance which would exclude Constance and her girlfriend.
Unfortunately for them, the AHA (American Humanist Association) stepped in and received a $20,000 donation to hold a private, all-welcome, no-discrimination dance.
It’s good to see atheist and secular groups engaging the community in ways that better our relationship with religious or agnostic individuals who suffer the same discrimination as do atheists.
