Catholics suggest that Abbott isn’t that bad
A new article in the Sydney Morning Herald caught my eye as it attempted to suggest that Tony Abbott is no scarier than any other politician. Never mind his right-wing Catholic views on issues such as medical research, abortion, euthanasia, gay marriage, and asylum seekers — that just shows that he has principles!
I hate to resort to Godwin’s Law, but Hitler had some pretty strong principles too.
The author of the article is Greg Craven, the vice-chancellor of the Australian Catholic University, and the article unashamedly wedges it’s nose directly up Abbott’s smug bottom.
Craven argues that Abbott’s hardline views on some touchy subjects is a good thing, and that everyone allows their religious beliefs (or lack thereof) to influence their political decisions, hence there’s nothing wrong with Abbott letting his Catholicism dictate his own politics.
The clincher for me comes when Craven tells us not to worry: one man can’t affect Australia’s politics that much, I mean, after all, there is an entire government to protect us from the crazies.
Pardon me if I’m not convinced.
